Zebra Elephant Ears, Alocasia zebrina
OVERVIEW
A stunningly vibrant and striking alocasia, with distinctive stripes running up the long spindly stems up to the arrow shaped leaves.
A wildly popular choice recently, owing to the photogenic nature of its stems (that people generally comment outshine the leaves) and its quick growth.
Great choice for a relative newcomer for plants looking for something slightly more challenging that will grow quickly given the right conditions into a gorgeous specimen.
LIGHT
Somewhere shadier is best, but it will also enjoy somewhere bright out of direct sun. If in a brighter spot, make sure you turn it every now and then.
TEMPERATURE
Keeping warm at a minimum of 16°C / 60°F above 70° in summer will promote faster growth.
WATER
During summer, keep it really well watered. Never let the compost get totally dry except for in deep winter.
FOOD
Feed well over summer and not at all over winter.
TIPS
Don't worry if some of the outer stems begin to turn a bit brown at the ends and on the leaves, simply cut them off once they've dried out (they re-distribute the energy to the rest of the plant.) However, if the BOTTOM of the stem is turning a yellowish brown, remove it as fast as possible (rotting.)
