Mother In-Law’s Tongue / Sansevieria laurentii

OVERVIEW

Another really tough sansevieria that can cope in almost any interior environment, the Snake plant boasts long, sword-like leaves with gold trim and speckled greens. They can reach over a metre in height, providing a sculptural specimen that goes incredibly well in tall containers. Popular for decades, the ease of care and sharp edges are fantastically versatile and create elegance in any room.
Easily one of the most adaptable plants, adjusting itself to either direct sunshine or almost total darkness.
Noted for its unique photosynthetic cycle, which releases oxygen at night. This makes it a popular choice for bedrooms.

LIGHT

Will take any position, from dark shade to full sun. Be aware that when it’s in place, it will adapt to it and it’s important not to move it once it’s adjusted. If you find the plant is going a bit wonky, then rotate it towards the sunlight every now and then.

TEMPERTURE

Keep it warm if it’s wet. Otherwise, you don’t have to worry about it getting cold too much. That said, it will never survive a frost so if keeping it outdoors make sure it’s back in by autumn.

WATER

Only water when the plant is very dry. While it’s an easy one to take care of, the main reason it fails is over-watering. Bear in mind that the plant likes to be pot-bound, so if there's not much soil in the pot due to the roots filling it then it will need watering more often. No need to mist this plant.

FOOD

Sparingly feed it during spring and summer. Just once or twice over the whole growing season is more than adequate.

TIPS

If the tips of your Mother-in-Law's Tongue fray, don't be tempted to cut them off as the problem will worsen. Accept these minor imperfections or cut away the whole frond at the base.
