Cast Iron | COMMON NAME / BOTANICAL NAME Cast Iron Plant / Aspidistra elatior OVERVIEW If you really do struggle with keeping your house plants alive, aspidistra is the plant for you. They have been a favourite in British and American interiors for centuries. It is referred to as the Bar-room plant for its ability to survive in smoky, dingy bars where it will be knocked about and neglected. Largely resistant to many pests and will grow gradually, to a maximum height of around a metre. They last a long, long time. There are specimens confirmed to have lived for well over 100 years. Over time it will sprout new leaves, moving towards the edge of the pot and eventually creating a bushy mass of packed foliage. The roots are similarly slow growing to the plant itself, but what it lacks in excitement it more than makes up for in durability and hardiness. It will occasionally produce an unusual looking stemless purple flower, sprouting from the compost at the base of the plant. LIGHT It will thrive in a huge range of light levels and environments. As long as it is out of direct sunlight, it is likely to do well. A bright position, with regular watering, will promote the fastest growth but still do not expect it to grow at a million miles an hour. It will tolerate even the darkest corners of the home. TEMPERATURE Does not mind getting cold compared to most other tropical plants. Will still do best in spots that maintain a steady temperature above 15 Celsius. WATER Moderate watering. It is not a fussy plant and can go for weeks without any care at all. If it is placed in a particularly bright spot, it will need additional water to account for its extra growth. During winter, ensure it is never sitting in water for extended periods of time and allow the plant to dry out completely between watering. This plant is perfect for the forgetful owner. FOOD Use half-strength liquid plant food over the growing season to maximise growth. Being such a hardy houseplant, it will scarcely need this to survive and you will still not see huge month-on-month growth. You may however be rewarded with its strange yet gorgeous purple flowers. TIPS An incredibly versatile and resilient plant, that will make a great space-filler for that notorious back corner where every other plant seems to perish. PETS Safe for pets. |
